Why doesn’t your IT guy take FULL responsibility for your network?

June 7, 2010

The answer is simple; most IT providers (especially those that charge by the hour for support) DEPEND on your network going haywire from time-to-time to provide them with a never ending stream of cash for your problems!

Fixing your network is like killing the goose that laid the golden egg!

If a network support company who charges by the hour actually PREVENTED problems from happening then they would be shooting themselves in the foot, right? Hey, these guys are stupid. But it is a shame that they profit from misconfigured and poorly maintained systems that could easily be fixed.

The problem with current IT support is that companies pay for it completely wrong, in fact it is this payment method that puts you and your IT company at odds.

Image you had a business and every time something went wrong with your customers business you got paid?

Let’s extend this to the Insurance Industry. I am sure that most of you have multiple insurance policies that cover most foreseeable disasters your company can run into. My guess is that your Insurance agent is big on ‘loss prevention’ and reviewing your business needs to be certain your risk is properly addressed. Obviously, your Insurance Agent wants to minimize losses because their business profitability is tied to the loss ratios of the business that they write; this is how it should be. When your business runs trouble free, your Insurance Agent is happy and so are you!

Now what if your Insurance Agent was given a ‘bonus’ every time you had a loss? I know this is crazy and hard to imagine!

But this is EXACTLY how most IT support companies work. They are ‘bonused’ through billable hours when you have a loss so their incentive to practice proper ‘loss prevention’ is absolutely ZERO, in fact I can argue very simply that thy have a negative incentive to your system running smoothly.

This, my fellow business owners, is WHY your IT guy won’t accept full responsibility for your network; they don’t get paid that way.

Good Networking!
