Our team got together just before the holidays to volunteer for the USO of NC. As a member of the Raleigh-Durham Advisory Committee, I jumped at the chance to volunteer for USO’s Christmas Stocking program.
The United Service Organizations of North Carolina (USO of NC), founded in 1941, is the lead organization charged with supporting military servicemen and women in the state of North Carolina.
Eleven percent of U.S. military active duty forces call North Carolina home. With seven major military installations, North Carolina has the fourth largest demographic of active and reserve duty components in the country.
USO of NC is an independent 501C-3 organization chartered by USO Arlington as a self-sustaining separate operating entity. USO of NC is wholly reliant on funding from private grants, donations, corporate gifts and sponsorships, and fundraisers. It receives no direct funding from the national USO or from the government.
As part of the USO’s Christmas Stocking program, we packaged 51 holiday stockings for military service members who were unable to return home for the holidays. The USO then distributed these stockings to the troops. Our support of the Christmas Stocking program demonstrates the general respect we have for the military and, in some small way, give a little back to those that are giving so much.
If you haven’t participated in a service or volunteer project with your staff, or you haven’t done so recently, I urge you to open your calendar and plan an outreach effort in 2018.
There are tons of great opportunities for volunteering here in the Triangle – one easy way to find a good cause is to ask your staff for ideas – what causes are they passionate about?
I encourage all business leaders to make the time to evaluate your personal passions and how you can get your company involved in those passions.
